LGBT Youth Scotland Calls for Action to Improve the Lives of LGBTI Young People

LGBT Youth Scotland announces its manifesto calling for the Scottish Government and public bodies to take action to improve the lives of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and intersex (LGBTI) young people. Despite changes in Scottish legislation over the past decade, LGBTI young people continue to face significant and multiple forms of prejudice and discrimination.

LGBT Youth Scotland’s manifesto ‘Improving the Lives of LGBTI Young People’ comes from research and consultation with LGBTI young people across Scotland. It pushes for twenty key actions that policy makers and key decision makers must take by the year 2021 to make Scotland more inclusive.

One of the asks includes a dedicated fund for initiatives to prevent and address homophobic, biphobic, and transphobic bullying in schools, including training for teachers, and approaches which support embedding LGBTI inclusion in policy and practice. LGBT Youth Scotland’s Life in Scotland for LGBT Young People: Education Report tells us that 69.1% of all LGBT respondents had experienced homophobic or biphobic bullying in school and 76.9% of transgender young people had experienced homophobic, biphobic, or transphobic bullying. Alongside calls for inclusive education, key themes include transgender and intersex legislation and policy, housing and homelessness, LGBTI safety, and health.

Fergus McMillan, Chief Executive of LGBT Youth Scotland commented:

‘Over the next five years we want to see significant improvements for LGBTI young people living in Scotland. There are numerous issues affecting LGBTI young people growing up in Scotland that must be addressed. Some of these issues include: young people continuing to report that they do not feel safe, supported or included in their education; limited legislative protection for transgender young people, particularly those who do not identify as male or female; and, the need to review the provision of gender specialist health care in Scotland.

This manifesto outlines clear and achievable actions for the Scottish Government and public bodies to achieve by the year 2021. It provides an opportunity to improve the lives of LGBTI young people and identifies clear actions for making Scotland the best place for LGBTI young people to grow up.
