Young people lit up the stage at Allsorts LGBT youth group in Dundee, as kings and queens led their first drag show. The show took place in November at The Shore, where the group meet every week to hang out with their peers in a safe and welcoming youth work space.

Speaking after the event Youth Worker Georgia Grainger commented: “The show was a massive success. The young people raised enough money to cover food for their Christmas party, and the queens and kings all inspired the younger ones in the group to do something similar.”

“Everyone did amazing with the show tonight. So proud to be part of an amazing group of loving caring people who we can be totally ourselves with.”

Barry Jordan, Youth and Community Development Officer (Tayside) added:

“The event was organised by the Allsorts Youth Committee and members of Allsorts. They did this completely on their own with little support from staff. It was a great turn out on the night, with over 50 people there including some new young people, parents and family.”

Jack Ross, one of the young committee members who helped organis the event said:

“I suggested that we should have a drag night in Allsorts, unware that I would end up running it. I was unsure of where to begin but the staff at LGBT YS supported and encouraged me.”

“We have just done our first full drag show in the group and I can’t believe in the space of a year this has happened. We now have about 10 queens and kings in the group and are hoping to preform next year at several events around the city to promote the group and our love for drag."

Speaking about why they love drag so much,
Jack added:

“It’s simple, it’s an escape. I get away from all my problems and mistakes that I’ve made in my own life, plus I adore the stage. I always had the desire to perform just not the confidence but Vanity [drag character] she gives me that.”

Another young person who attends the Allsorts group commented:

“Everyone did amazing with the show tonight. So proud to be part of an amazing group of loving caring people who we can be totally ourselves with.”
