LGBT History Month Gets Creative

LGBT Youth Scotland and LGBT History Month are excited to announce the launch of a significant new fund, supported by Creative Scotland, to support cultural activity as part of LGBT History Month in February 2013.

Applications are now open for the Cultural Events Fund and Cultural Commissions Fund. Deadline Friday 7th December.

Cultural events held by grass roots organisations will be supported with individual grants of £500 to £1000. These grants will fund cultural activity and events during History Month, allowing organisations who would not otherwise be able to host events to develop exciting exhibitions, performances and activities that will impact on communities across Scotland. Last year over 80 events were held for LGBT History Month. These ranged from intimate storytelling events, book readings, film screenings, art exhibitions and performances, to club nights, ceilidhs and even a fun run.

The position of LGBT people in our society has changed over time – LGBT History Month is a fantastic opportunity for us to look back at where we have come from and to look in to the future. Culture is possibly the best way for everyone – gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender or straight – to come together and exchange ideas and explore each other’s viewpoint. By supporting grassroots organisations to host cultural events during February 2013, we hope to have a lasting impact upon the inclusion of LGBT people in the fabric of Scotland.

Separately, the Cultural Commissions fund will award bursaries of between £8,000 and £16,000 to support one or two high-profile artists to carry out artistic projects that explore LGBT culture and history. These substantial commissions will lead to the creation of high quality art for a wide Scottish audience and will help to inspire community groups to deepen their engagement with LGBT History Month. For more information on either fund click here or contact eventfund@lgbthistory.org.uk
