Going the extra 26.2 miles for LGBTYS!

Robert Cole

We’re pleased to announce that Robert Cole has been co-opted on to the LGBT YS Board of Trustees and shortly after his first Board meeting will be running the Edinburgh Marathon for the 12th time, this time to raise funds for LGBT YS. “ I took to running in my teens when an enlightened games teacher at school noticed my lack of football and rugby skills and suggested that I’d make a good runner.  I’ve never looked back”, says Rob, “except that is when I’m nearing the finishing line and want to make sure no one’s going to overtake me!!”

Rob is a Head of Business Improvement for BT based in Edinburgh.  Formerly Chair of BT’s LGBT staff network, BT Kaleidoscope, he is joint founder and treasurer for SWAN LGBT Networking, the Scottish business networking organisation. Rob responded to a presentation by Fergus McMillan at a SWAN event hosted by LGBT YS to become a trustee. He’s also Vice Chair of alternative dispute resolution charity, Scottish Mediation Network.  For two years from 2011-2013 he was Chair of Loud and Proud LGBT Choir and still sings when he can fit it in amongst his work and running!

Rob lives in Edinburgh with his partner Nigel, a secondary school deputy head.  They’re looking forward to taking advantage of Equal Marriage in 2015.

“I’m delighted to be joining the LGBT YS Board.  I grew up at a time when there was so little positive visibility of LGBT people, indeed so much hostility and legal sanctions.  I’m passionate about supporting young people to be confident about who they are and be supported and celebrated by their friends and family.  I’m keen to share my experience in working across a large organisations and more recently across different sectors to promote equality and diversity.
