NYC News
Welcome to our LGBT National Youth Council (NYC) news page. The NYC is a team of passionate young people who want to make a difference to LGBT peoples' lives at local, national and international levels. If you have the drive to make a difference to LGBT peoples lives, then we want to hear from you.
But for just now, we are going to discuss what has been happening recently in the NYC. Happy reading!
In April the NYC held a Democracy Day hustings event, where the NYC got the opportunity to meet candidates who were standing for the Edinburgh North and Leith parliamentary seat in the General Election 2010.
This event gave the NYC the chance to meet and question candidates on their LGBT related policies and equality strategies more generally.
It also gave the NYC the opportunity to explain about their Rock Your Vote Campaign, which the NYC has been working on, which sought to explain the importance of voting in Parliamentary Elections and a 'How To Rock Your Vote' guide which you can download from our resources section.
The NYC Democracy Day event was very successful and we received positive feedback from the NYC and the General Election candidates.
At this event we also launched the new NYC Manifesto. If you are interested in reading our Manifesto please have a look at our resources section.
In May the NYC attended a weekend residential in Linlithgow. This residential focused on reflection and the achievements of the NYC and the individual accomplishments of the NYC team throughout the year.
This was the final residential for the NYC for this term of NYC'ers, as the new NYC term will start after the National Gathering this July.
During the residential the NYC also started working on the four campaign areas from the NYC Manifesto that will be presented at LGBT Youth Scotland’s annual National Gathering. From these four campaign areas, the National Gathering attendees will get the opportunity to vote on the two areas that they wish the NYC to build campaigns on, for the next term.
The four campaign areas that will be presented at the National Gathering will be:
- End discriminatory blood donation ban for gay and bisexual men
- Challenge homophobic bullying in Scotland's schools
- Continue work to tackle hate crime in Scotland
- Challenge negative representation of young people in society
The Linlithgow residential was very successful and all the NYC worked very hard and had a lot of fun as well.
