Trip to Gay Prom in Broxburn
On Friday 21st August a group of LGBT young people from the Borders headed up to the first ever Gay Prom in Scotland. There was a fantastic turn out of over 150 LGBT and Straight youths. The event began at 6.30pm and continued on through to 10.00pm, We were all feeling as if we were out of our comfort zone at first but then a few of us got up to dance and felt a bit better. It was like the American Proms that you see on the Films that most of us watch. There was a professional photographer, balloons, ribbons and an arch way for the entrance covered in lights and a DJ. There was an amazing atmosphere with everybody dancing and having a laugh.
It was such a great experience as the school dances were always so straight and girls had to dance with boys and vice versa, this was our first chance to dance with who we really wanted to without pretending and not a single Scottish Dance around (not even the Gay Gordons)
Steph from the group says:
“ I would not really go to a dance but I felt in my self that I had to go, I felt out of place when I first went but after a while I was ok and started to dance and come out to be myself and I had a well good night and meant sum well cool people.”
This was the third annual event for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) young people, their friends and all young people in West Lothian. This event follows on from the very successful “A Very Gayleigh Ceilidh” events held in 2007 and 2008. The eveningl included live bands, a DJ set, a buffet and a special guest appearance from LA writer, producer and director Katherine Brooks. Katherine is the producer of MTV programmes such as The Osborne’s and the Simple Life and she also wrote and directed the award-winning movie “Loving Annabelle” which has made a massive impact in the LGBT community.
