Improving Equality in NHS Forth Valley

In December NHS Forth Valley will be producing a Single Equality Scheme and Action plan 2009-2012.

The Single Equality Scheme will combine NHS Forth Valley's existing three separate schemes on Disability, Gender and Race into one single document, as well as including the equality strands of Age, Religion and Belief and Sexual Orientation.

What is an equality scheme?

Producing a Single Equality Scheme and Action Plan will set out NHS Forth Valley's commitment on how they will deliver services that are free from discrimination and harassment for both patients and employees and identify what actions they have in place to support this.

Why is Equality and Diversity Important?

Equality:

Applies to all of us; it is not just about minority groups or treating people differently.

Means making sure that the healthcare treatment each person is receiving is appropriate and fair.

Diversity:

Is about the recognition and valuing of difference as individuals, with different needs, requirements and identities.

It is about creating a culture and practices that recognise, respect and value difference for the benefit of service users, members of the public and members of staff.
