Anti-Bullying Week 2009
Anti-Bullying Week 2009 will take place from Monday 16 to Friday 20 November.
Anti-Bullying Week is designed to raise awareness of antibullying initiatives amongst children and young people and the organisations and adults who work with them.
The Scottish Government has, again, joined forces with respectme, Scotland’s Anti-Bullying Service, to launch a national competition in schools and youth groups. Please display the attached poster to raise awareness of the competition in your school or youth group.
You can use the competition as part of your school or youth group’s work for Anti-Bullying Week - or you can undertake a range of other activities to mark the occasion. Visit the respectme website for some inspiration!
The competition - What bullying means to me
We want to see a range of submissions from individuals or groups which address the theme, ‘What bullying means to me’. We were delighted to receive some really creative and thought-provoking entries based around this theme last year and we’re looking forward to seeing how it will be interpreted
again this time around.
What do you have to do?
This year the competition has been split into three different categories which allow you to be as imaginative as you wish! We’ve moved away from age-based categories because it was becoming difficult to judge fairly - for example, where there was a poster and a short film in the same age group. The new
categories will allow us to judge the same type of submission more comparatively.
Category A – Artistic
Entries in this category will include: posters, photographs or sculpture. This is the ideal category for the artistic children and young people you work with!
Category B – Creative writing
This category includes: poems, songs, raps and stories. If you work with children and young people who enjoy creative writing, this is the category for them.
Category C – Performance
One for the ‘performers’ you work with, this category includes: short films, drama/drama scripts, animation and dance.
So, although the categories have been set this year, there’s still plenty of scope for creativity as you explore, ‘what bullying means to me’.
What are we looking for in competition entries?
It’s quite a wide-ranging topic and we want to see young people using the above categories to illustrate what bullying means to them. We’re not just looking for posters or other entries with
general anti-bullying statements or images. We all know that bullying is a problem, but we want young people to express how it makes them feel – whether they have experienced bullying behaviour or not – and to translate these feelings and emotions into a submission which is as creative or abstract as they want it to be!
Who can enter?
This competition is open to children and young people aged between 9 and 16 who attend school, out-of-school projects or youth groups. You can submit individual and group entries. The competition is fully accessible to all young people and, if required, entries can be submitted into the category for young people with additional support needs.
Who will be judging the competition entries?
Competition entries will be short-listed and judged by two members of the Scottish Government Schools Directorate and the Director and Communications Manager from respectme. The criteria outlined above will be used to judge all entries. A winner and runner-up will be awarded in each of the three categories.
What will you win?
Winning entries will win a trip to the cinema for their class or youth group to see a film of their choice, and will have their submission showcased at respectme’s Anti-Bullying Week conference in November.
A number of other prizes and goodie bags will also be on offer for the winning and runner-up entries.
How do you enter?
Simply attach the entry form to your submission, clearly outlining the category being entered and whether it’s a group or individual submission. Please complete an entry form for every individual submission.
* PLEASE NOTE THAT SUBMISSIONS CANNOT BE RETURNED*
When is the deadline?
The deadline for all entries is Friday 9 October 2009, so there’s plenty of time to get involved. Winners will be notifi ed in the week beginning 19 October, and will receive their prizes at respectme’s Anti-Bullying Week conference in Glasgow on Tuesday 17 November.
