Equality and Anti-Discrimination

Despite all the progress that has been made for LGBT rights over the last couple of decades, discrimination against people on grounds of their sexual orientation or gender identity or expression is still a problem for many LGBT people, and some who do not identify as LGB or T. However, there are now specific laws to protect you against discrimination because of who you are in employment, training, colleges and universities, at school, and when using public services, such as clinics, GPs, and many others.

Unfortunately, discrimination law is not exactly uncomplicated or accessible. These pages are here to give you some idea of the different types of discrimination that are against the law, some examples and some pointers as to where to go for help if you are being discriminated against. Going to court or an employment tribunal can be a daunting and expensive experience. However, if you know your rights and know who to turn to for help, you may not have to go to court to defend your rights or the rights of others.

Click the relevant sections on the left to read more about what discriminatory behaviours are against the law and what the responsibilities of some of the important people and places in our life are, such as schools, colleges and universities, and the workplace. If you want to find out more,  you can always get in touch with us by emailing rights@lgbtyouth.org.uk and we will try our very best to help.
