IDAHO 2008 in Scotland
The International Day Against HOmophobia and Transphobia – 17 May 2008
What is IDAHO?
IDAHO, the International Day against Homophobia and Transphobia, takes place on May 17th every year. It was on this date, in 1990, that the World Health Organisation removed homosexuality from their list of mental disorders.
IDAHO is an emerging international movement fighting for the universal recognition of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people’s human rights worldwide. Since its inception in 2005, IDAHO has been marked in a large variety of ways in more than 50 countries (see www.idahomophobia.org for previous IDAHO events around the world).
The main aims of IDAHO are to:
- provoke/encourage global action to defeat homophobia and strengthen LGBT people’s human rights
- coordinate initiatives and increase their visibility in order to send one strong and consistent message worldwide and on the same day
- raise the profile of the international campaign for LGBT human rights and communicate the importance of LGBT human rights worldwide to national governments and the international community.
