LGBT National Youth Council
Who We Are
The LGBT National Youth Council (NYC) is a network of young people from across Scotland, supported by LGBT Youth Scotland. Members, aged 13-26, are elected to represent lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) young people from their local LGBT youth group or local area.
The NYC meets nationally four times a year in areas all over Scotland for busy weekends of training, campaign work and feeding back local issues. Members also keep in touch between meetings by holding local area meetings, contributing to the NYC bebo, or discussing issues on LGBT Youth’s online forums.
The NYC has a dedicated worker at LGBT Youth Scotland who helps raise the profile of the NYC and supports members with their work. Their role is to identify opportunities for the NYC to get involved in to ensure that LGBT young people’s voices are heard at every level. They make sure that all NYC members are given the opportunity to fully participate in all work of the NYC.
LGBT Youth Scotland also has two Members of the Scottish Youth Parliament (MSYPs) who are elected from the NYC. It is their job to represent the views of LGBT young people to the whole of the Scottish Youth Parliament. All the NYC members play an important role in letting the MSYPs know what issues LGBT young people face in their area.
How to get Involved
There are three main ways you can get involved in the NYC.
Member
Members lead the work of the NYC, attending four national residentials a year, local meetings, events and developing the campaigns of the NYC. It’s a busy job and requires a lot of time and commitment.
To become a member of the NYC, you need to be elected by young people from your local group or area. Members are elected for a year and most elections are held at our annual National Gathering in the summer. If your group or area doesn’t already have an NYC rep, you can email us to set up an election.
Champion
If you don’t want to be a member (or there is already a member for your group/area), you can still support the work of the NYC. Either send us an email or ask your rep how to support the work of the NYC. This might involve helping with questionnaires, assisting at events, or just regularly contributing to the NYC bebo. You might also be offered the chance to attend one of our national meetings if there are any extra spaces.
Seats
You can be elected as a member of the NYC to represent an LGBT youth group or a local authority area. There is one seat per group and area.
A list of groups and areas already represented will be added shortly.
