Leaders Network
Although incredibly rewarding, leaders working with LGBT young people can sometimes have a difficult job.
Often they have to work in isolation, with very little support; groups often face problems attracting funding or making their services sustainable; the issues that young people present with can be highly complex and leaders can feel like they lack the relevant skills to support them, but are unable to refer them on to outside more specialist agencies; and it can often be difficult to break LGBT issues into the mainstream.
LGBT Youth Scotland's Leaders Network exists to support workers on issues such as those above. It is made up of staff and volunteers from all of the LGBT youth organisations in Scotland, as well as individuals who support young LGBT people in a different way, for example in generic youth work contexts.
Its aims are to:
- Improve the quality of work with LGBT young people
- To achieve a continuity of quality of service with LGBT young people around the country
- To create a workforce of better informed and trained leaders
- To reduce the isolation of leaders working with LGBT young people
- To share information and keep leaders updated
- To provide mechanisms for peer support for leaders
- To provide opportunities for joint work within the LGBT youth sector
The network meets approximately 4 times per year in central Scotland, and takes part in training; networking and specific pieces of project work.
