Dealing with Homophobia and Homophobic Bullying in Scottish Schools: Local Authority Training

LGBT Youth Scotland recently published our new resource on Dealing with Homophobia and Homophobic Bullying in Scottish Schools, a new toolkit resource designed to support teachers in recognising, challenging, and effectively reducing homophobia and homophobic bullying in their schools. The resource, funded by the Scottish Government and developed by LGBT Youth Scotland in partnership with Learning and Teaching Scotland (LTS), was distributed to all secondary schools and local authorities in January 2009.

LGBT Youth Scotland has announced details of four regional local authority training sessions to help support the use of the toolkit in Scottish schools, through a letter sent to all Directors of Education.

The sessions are happening in –

Glasgow on the 5th of May
Aberdeen on the 13th of May
Stirling on the 19th of May
Edinburgh on the 28th of May

The sessions have been designed in a train the trainer format equipping participants with skill necessary to train and support their colleagues and young people. The learning outcomes for the day are to

  • be familiar with the aims and structure of the Dealing with Homophobia and Homophobic Bullying toolkit
  • feel confident in their understandings of sexual orientation and the different expressions and effects of homophobia and homophobic bullying
  • feel confident in their understandings of ways in which to challenge homophobia and ways in which to support LGBT young people
  • understand the potential issues involved in raising LGBT issues with young people and ways to address these

There are limited spaces available at each session still available. If you or a colleague would like to attend please contact training@lgbtyouth.org.uk
