LGBT Youth Lothian celebrates History Month
Young people at LGBT Youth Lothian have planned and organized an exciting calendar of events and activities for LGBT History Month, celebrating the lives of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people in Scotland, past and present.
FUSION, LGBT Youth Lothian’s dynamic volunteer group, plans to produce LGBT pirate comics based on the stories of a few key LGBT pirate biographies. They’ll join with young people from VIVID in Glasgow and any others from elsewhere in dressing up in pirate gear and staging elements of the stories, using locations in Edinburgh and Glasgow, as the basis for the storytelling comics.
FUSION will also host pirate parties for themselves, SOUND YOUTH and VADA during February to reveal the truths of the lives of LGBT pirates, expect music in sea shanties, origins of pirate speech and the real histories of pirate activity in the 17th century!
There’s lots of other activities in store at our other youth groups, including:
- VADA, (age 17-25) are going to continue with the pirates theme, and will also be hosting a short presentation each week on a famous lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender person.
- SOUND Youth (age 13-17) are going to have a workshop on coming out in school, and approach their own schools with LGBT History Month materials. They will be watching a short film on Holocaust Memorial Day and creating an artistic response. They will also be expressing their identities through karaoke and video work.
- Out West will be dressing up for a movie night (Transamerica), and going bowling.
- Outreach – the outreach team will be at various events and venues including schools, youth groups, club nights and discos, letting people know about LGBT History Month.
- Professionals 20th February – workers and volunteers from LGBTYS will be visiting the Remember When photo archive at the Museums Collection Centre in Edinburgh. If you would like to join us please get in touch.
